Biography

Michelle S. Mehta has almost two decades experience in civil litigation. Prior to joining Burger | Meyer, LLP, Ms. Mehta developed a thriving freelance research and writing practice, drafting all types of legal briefs in federal and state litigation. She drafted appellate briefing that resulted in a successful California Supreme Court decision in DisputeSuite.com LLC v. Scoreinc.com, 2 Cal.5th 968 (2017), and successful summary judgment briefing in a personal injury case that led to a $20 million recovery for the client. Ms. Mehta also has experience in private and public entity workplace investigations, and spent three years as an arbitrator for small claims disputes.

Before her freelance practice, Ms. Mehta spent seven years as a Staff Attorney with the non-profit environmental organization Natural Resources Defense Counsel. She worked on successful appeals in City of Arcadia v. State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), 191 Cal.App.4th 156 (2010) and County of Los Angeles v. SWRCB, 143 Cal.App.4th 985 (2006), and drafted policy reports, including Thirsty for Answers: Preparing for the Water-related Impacts of Climate Change in American Cities (2011).

Ms. Mehta also worked at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett as a litigation associate, where she received an award by Public Counsel in connection with a pro bono wrongful foreclosure case. Following law school, Ms. Mehta clerked for the Honorable David O. Carter in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California. While at UCLA School of Law, Ms. Mehta served as Co-Editor in Chief of the Women’s Law Journal, and as a teaching fellow for Property Law.
